Writing Erotica: Porn vs. Erotica

Alice's Sexual Discovery in a Wonderful LandWelcome to my first post ever!!!

Before I wrote my first erotic novella Alice’s Sexual Discovery in a Wonderful Land, I was one of those authors who thought writing erotica would be a breeze. I mean, what’s the big deal? Just be a little more explicit in the bedroom and presto! Instant erotica!

I was wrong.

I realized that you could put a dirty story’s sex scene in four different categories.

  1. Porn – The sex scene arouses the reader.
  2. Erotica for Men – The sex scene arouses the reader and moves the story forward.
  3. Erotica for Women – The sex scene arouses the reader, moves the story forward, and advances the characters.
  4. Romantic Erotica – The sex scene arouses the reader, moves the story forward, advances the characters, and advances the relationship.

When I wrote Alice’s Sexual Discovery, an erotic version of Alice in Wonderland, I realized I couldn’t reach what I considered to be the highest level of erotica. Romantic erotica would not suit my story because Alice never stays with one person. Throughout the story she meets different characters, so Alice could never build a relationship. With that realization, I made the story be about her own sexual growth and her relationship with herself.

  1. I thoroughly enjoyed this. The way you adapted aspects of the original story to suit this very adult retelling had me smiling in recognition.
You allowed plenty of light hearted moments, which ensured that Alice’s self discovery didn’t get heavy and ponderous.

Despite the fact that Alice’s sexual adventures are not with just one partner, there’s enough romance to satisfy the
fluff bunny that I am, and some of her encounters are highly affectionate too.

I hope to mean more fairy tale erotica from you.

  2. I came across your post several months after you posted it. I wish I’d looked sooner. It’s excellent, really informative. I agree with what you say. I would love to read Alice’s Sexual Discovery

  3. Thank you for posting this, I have been researching this information. I started my own collection of stories to write, but now I am actually starting to really focus on getting the story written. I can say, it is definitely more than I anticipated. I thought the same way. I can just write down a bunch of sex scenes and throw a plot together. NOT THE CASE! But the development process has been so awesome.
